Nerariyan CBI
Watched the Malayalam film Nerariyan CBI today, at Sangeeth theatre. The film is the fourth CBI film, after Oru CBI Diarykkurippu (1988), Jagratha (1989) and Sethuramiyer CBI (2004), and it seems it is a rare occurrence in which the same artists (Scriptwriter SN Swami, director K Madhu, and actors Mammootty, Mukesh and Jagathi) come together for a fourth time, to make a film based on the same characters.
Nerariyan CBI is a murder mystery, and it retains suspense till the end, just like the previous CBI films. I felt that the director had a tighter grip in this movie compared to Sethuramiyer CBI, but I would place it behind the first two films in the series. The dialogues in CBI films are not very natural, and if we view the films with a critical mind, we can find any number of flows in the scripts. For example, the quiz scenes between Sethuramiyer and the manthravadi Kapra (played by Thilakan) looked comic and the scenes with Cochin Haneefa and Bindu Panikker were also unnecessary and totally out of place (even though they were funny). But overall, the film provides a very interesting and entertaining couple of hours to the viewer and it is commendable that a fourth episode was made in this series without diminishing the spirit of the original films to a large extent. The theme music, characters, actors - none of them bored me, and I wont mind watching a fifth episode.
It looks like Mammootty would take away the title of "evergreen hero of Malayalam" from Prem Nazir. The actor looks few years younger compared to Sethuramiyer CBI released two years back. I felt that he has lesser screen time in this film compared to the previous CBI films, but the film is built upon him. Even small roles in the film are done by established actors. Unlike the previous CBI films, There is no police officer interfering with Sethuramiyer's job in this film, and I missed the characters of Thara Das and Sathya Das.
