Pathetic State of Malayalam Films

I watched several new Malayalam films in the last few months. Not even a single one of them was anything remotely memorable, and these days I have developed a kind of aversion towards Malayalam films. Here are few words on the movies I watched:

Madhuchandralekha, Alice in Wonderland: These movies have Jayaram in the lead role, and are directed by established directors like Rajasenan and Siby Malayil. Both of them are horribly boring, and have idiotic climax scenes. I felt sorry for Jayaram as he is being offered only these kind of films these days. Alice in Wonderland is the worst film by Siby Malayil that I have watched so far. I thought that Madhuchandralekha would be the worst of Rajasenan as well, until I watched Immini Nalloral, which provides a tough competition for this spot. I watched one more film with Jayaram as the hero - Pouran. This is a political film. Did the director, Sundar Das, believe that his boring film would turn out be an "eye opener" for the Keralites?

Each time I watch a new superman film from Mohanlal, I console myself that that would be his worst. But, his next film turns out to be worse always. Nattu Rajavu, directed by Shaji Kailas, is presently the worst Mohanlal film in my list. I also watched Mohanlal's Udayon directed by Bhadran, which is relatively far better and has Lal's brilliant performance in the old man's role.

I watched four of Mammootty's films. Vesham and Rappakal are old wine of family stories (sacrifice by the good man in the family, misunderstandings, etc. etc.) in old bottles. The bottle used for Rappakal is that of old Malayalam films like Valsalyam, and the film is relatively better. For Vesham, they have used an old rusted drum from ancient Tamil films to offer the old wine, and the film is unbearable despite Mammootty's efforts. The third Mammootty film I watched was Ranjith's Black, which looked like a Malayalam version of a gangster film from Ram Gopal Verma, and was watchable for once. I was prejudiced against Mammootty's comedy film Thuruppu Gulan; Contrary to my expectations, I found this film to be watchable.

I watched two films of Suresh Gopi - Bharat Chandran IPS and Tiger. I couldn’t stand Bharat Chandran IPS, and I am unable to find any reason for this film becoming a "comeback film" for the actor. Since I like suspense films, I found Tiger watchable, even though there is nothing innovative in it.

Dileep's three films - Pachchakkuthira, Kochi Rajavu and Lion - were all unbearable. Pachchakkuthira is in the same category of some of Vinayan's sadistic films, which attempt to make the audience laugh by showing mannerisms of mentally and physically handicapped characters. Kochi Rajavu is another typical Dileep film, where we could see a good-for-nothing hero managing to make the heroine fall in love with him, and then we also get to see Harishree Ashokan taking the role of a mediator and saying dialogues like "snehikkan mathram ariyavunna Unniyude hrudayam...", etc. Dileep's political film Lion was a major hit in Kerala it seems! I felt it to be a boring film with deja vu feelings all over.

I watched two films of Prithviraj - Police and Kruthyam. It was just few weeks back that I watched these films, but I already find it difficult to recollect what these films were all about. I also had the misfortune to watch few other superstar-less films like Kilukkam Kilukilukkam, Manju Poloru Penkutti, Otta Nanayam and Hrudayathil Sookshikkan. The less said about these films, the better.

You said it!
I had been itching to make a post like this, but didn't know where to begin or end and there was so much to vent.

I do not really subscribe to the adage, 'old is gold' but in this case I'll have to make an exception. Malayalam cinema before the 90s had some kinda magic - Padmarajan movies, Sreenivasan-Sathyan Anthikkad team and the older movies from Sethumadhavan, KG George etc. Malayalam produces 100% trash these days, even veteran directors are churning out this d-grade stuff that could only mean one thing - there are takers(ie audience) for it.

Of the movies you've mentioned I've seen Pouran, Nattu Rajavu, Vesham, Rappakal, Black, Kochi Rajavu, Police,Kilukkam Kilukilukkam, Manju Poloru Penkutti, Ottananayam and Hridyathil Sookshikkan. The only film I found digestable was Manju Poloru Penkutti, maybe because it explored an interesting subject. Less said about Mohanlal these days the better and I personally would like to wipe-out the entire Harishree Ashokan species from planet earth. To clean up Malayalam cinema is going to be a monumental task, wonder who is up for it?

Evideyokkeyo Enthokkeyo Cheenju Naarunnundu!

I think malayalam filmmakers and actors have lost that artistic innovation somewhere. The same people like Mohanlal, Mammootty, Sibi Malayil, Jayaram and Rajasenan have produced numerous brilliant performances in the past

I would also blame the changing times and tastes of mass audience these days which makes filmmakers churn out such craps.

Though a few of the audiences(people like me and you) still stick with our simple tastes of good , artistic and simple cinema expectations, the majority of the audience still need the kind of superhuman lal or "valiyettan" mammu or romantic salimkumar or more "shit" and guns of suresh gopi or comic tragedies of a dileep and jayasurya like "shaddi getting mixed with sambhar"

I still wonder and keep expecting with my fingers crossed, if Malayalam cinema can ever make a comeback?

Suraj

What to do Ratheesh? Nammudae karmabhalam....allathentha parayaan!!!

I saw Kirthichakra's tamil version, Aran. The movie was a sort of relief after seeing regional junks for almost six months!!! I really wonder why people make movies. They do not have any respect for the powerful medium!! Kayyil kurachu kasundenkil, enthu venamenkelum aakkam ennoru attiutde.....!! Recently I saw KANK, just out of curiosity regarding its hype, though I am sure how far a hindi movie can go when it comes to handling relationships. Really felt like vomiting....I was happy that I did not pay dollars to watch it....

hmm..i think its just because the audience demand it.as suraj puts it they want "lalettan" or "vallyettan"..not good characters..when thanmathra was released(it was far better compared to the craps coming these days) there were no audience to watch it..at last it just escaped of not becoming a block buster disaster because of the excessive promotion by media..

Keerthi chakra is a good movie..not a gr8 one..because it was lacking pace at times (even though it picket it up in 2nd half..)
and it was multilingual with tamil and hindi most of the time..that was a hindrance for me to enjoy..and songs were out of place
because even if they were removed nothing would have happened to the totality of the movie....but we should watch this movie to appreciate the hard work the crew has put in to shoot in "real" militant locations in kashmir and afghanistan..also to salute our jawan who lost their life. :)

KANK the least said the better..I didnt like it as a movie..because i felt the love b/w sharukh and rani was not convincing..
sharukh loves rani because he is jealous of his wifes success in career and feeling inferior that he is not able to do it..
and rani loves sharukh because she does not like to go out for a disco with her loving husband !! ( and later she likes to go to
watch foot ball match with sharukh) also she is not able to passionately make love with her husband(which she is able to do with sharukh later !!!!!!!) and climax is left to you....Also it was really a looooooong movie..3 hours 15 minutes...

but i found it to be worth the ticket price considering the beautiful locations, some hummable songs, stars(not characters in movie) and the designer clothes they wear :) i think, even hard core sharukh fans wont like his performance in this movie..

actual problem?

I am not sure what exactly is the actual problem. Unlike hollywood movies which has movies for different market segments( kid, teen, thirtysomething crowd etc), indian movies mostly cater to only one market segment. I guess most of us( who reads/writes these blogs) does not belong that segment. So we cannot appreciate those movies. Our age group might like early movies of mohanlan, but i don't know if the present younger generation (less than 20 years) will like those. Also when we used to like those movies, elders used to like nasir and madhu's marrum chutti premam movies, which we used to hate. :-)
I think malayalam movie producers should produce quality movies with actors who have good acting skills(not superstars) to cater to niche markets, rather target all movies to be "blockbusters" with action/romantic/drama/comedy mixed as a cocktail.

Sure agree with you :-)

I strongly agree with your feelings, its HIGH time that Kerala state declares a "bandh" on malayalam movies and shuts down the industry for a couple of years so that directors and script writers and actors can all sit down, take a deep breath and think about how to revive it and then come back again (well, that was just my frustration speaking :-). Malayalam films are really horrible and as you said, I too have developed an aversion and even contempt for them.

Its not just malayalam movies that are bad.

I spent 110 bucks for watching Kabhi Alvida last month and got a sore back and a headache instead watching for 4 hours. Absolute cr@p it was.

In malayalam we have the odd Udayanaanu Thaaram, Achan urangatha veedu, Thanmaathra and Classmates I heard was a good movie as well.
Ditto in hindi with a Black or a Munnabhai as the saving graces
