Tamil film Payanam tells the story of a plane hijack, and the rescue operation by commandos. The film is an engaging watch from its very first scene till the climax. Even though Telugu star Nagarjuna is acting in the movie as the lead commando officer, there is no super-heroism here, and the story and characters are given real importance. In between the commando operations we also see the dilemma of the government officials, opportunism of the press and media, etc., which are some of the standard ingredients of Major Ravi films, but in Payanam they never appear as intrusive. I felt that some of the passengers looked a bit too relaxed in their expressions for the situation they were in, and the comedy track that went in parallel between a film star and his fan sitting in the plane was diluting the atmosphere a bit (though those scenes were interesting to watch if they were taken on their own). Overall, director Radha Mohan has made an interesting thriller, standing within the limitations of Indian Cinema.
While I was watching this movie, I was thinking about Major Ravi's Malayalam film, Kandahar, which was also released around the same time and was supposed to tell the story of a plane hijack. I had hoped that Kandahar would be a thrilling watch, but it came out to be a pathetic bore.
